Abdülmecit
Abdülmecit (1868-1944)
He was born in 1868, the son of the artist Sultan Abdülaziz II. He became caliph for some time after the end of the sultanate. He was not only an artist, but also a patron of others. While he was shahzadah, he also was the honorary president of the Ottoman Painters Assembly, established in 1910, and tried his best to protect artists.
Abdülmecit’s works of art are sensitive and realistic. He possessed a superior understanding of colour to that of his contemporaries. His paintings Beethoven, Goethe and Yavuz Sultan Selim were displayed at the Vienna Exhibition in 1918. A portrait of Sultan Aziz on horseback, Recaizade Ekrem and Abdülhakhamit are some of his most important works.
