SEPETÇİOĞLU, Mustafa Necati

Writer (b. 1932, Zile / Tokat). After he attended primary and junior high school in Zile (1947), he graduated from Haydarpaşa High School (1950) and İstanbul University, Faculty of Literature, Department of Turkish Language and Literature (1956).

He worked as an officer at the İstanbul Municipality, as manager of publications at the Turkish Red Crescent Society (1962), as the chief in the İstanbul Social Security Foundation Law Directorate, in the National Education Printing House (1968) and as a publication compilation manager (1974).

His first stories were published in the Hakikat newspaper, which was printed in Sivas (1948). Later, his stories appeared reviews such as İstanbul, Yol, Türk Yurdu, Türk Dili (1955-59), Türk Edebiyatı.

His novel, Çağlayanlı Vadi (The Valley with a Waterfall) was serialized in Vatan newspaper (1966-71). He wrote in a collaborative work know as the “River Novel”, in which Turkish history was the subject, starting from the Malazgirt victory (1071), until the interval of the sultanate rule during the Ottoman Period; in his other novels, modern Türkiye’s changes in society and its consequences are discussed. His play with the title Trampacılar (Traders) was staged at the İstanbul Municipal City Theater (March, 1968).

His most successful work in play writing, Büyük Otmarlar (The Great Otmars) was first put on the stage by the İstanbul University Student Council Youth Theater (1967), and afterwards was selected as the best play at the European Intercollegiate Theater Festival (1968).

He won the Ministry of National Education Award with his play Çardaklı Bakıcı (Caretaker from the Arbor); in 1980 with his books Gece Vaktinde Gün Dönümü (Solstice at Night Time) and Karanlıkta Mum Işığı (Candle Light in the Dark), in 1981 with his book Can Ocağında Pişen Aş (Food that is Cooked in the Oven of Life) he won the Turkish National Culture Foundation Culture Award; and in 1980, he won the Novelist of the Year Award given by the Writers Union of Türkiye with his work named Ve Çanakkale 3 / Döndüler (And Çanakkale 3 / They Returned). In 1994, he was given the Superior Service Certificate of the Professional Association of Scientific and Literary Work Owners of Türkiye. In 1998, he was elected to the Atatürk Language and History Association Membership of Honor.
