Socks
Socks
Taking national costume as a whole, knitted socks clearly occupy an important
place with their original designs and harmonious use of color. Socks are defined
as “knitted cloth for the feet” in the Encyclopedia of Art.
Knitted socks which occupy an important place and have a particular
significance in Turkish handicrafts with their different materials and
meaningful designs began to lose importance with the advent of machine-made
products.
They are knitted with single or five knitting needles and consist of wool,
mohair, bristle and silk threads. The designs are the most attractive
characteristics of knitted socks. Although these may differ from region to
regions, in general they reflect the owner’s social and marital status, and even
show the number and gender of their owner’s children. Different designs and
colors are used in socks for men, women, young people, the elderly and children.
When socks are knitted with five needles, small holes are opened, thus either
increasing or reducing the number of loops.
